Nearly everyone takes a road trip at one time for another. For some it may be a leisurely bucket-list drive across the country, while others may have long commutes to the office or worksite daily. A Sunday drive in the country with the family is an American tradition. Whether it’s for work or play, getting in the car to head out on the highways and byways of our communities is a key part of life. And it can be fun cruising down the highway with the windows down and the radio playing a favorite song. Many drivers simply become one with their vehicles.
Sure, there may be hassles with traffic slowdowns, detours and congestion. Still, nothing ruins a trip faster than a sudden bump or noise or shake coming from the vehicle, or a light blinking from the dashboard. All of a sudden you’re sitting on the highway with the vehicle flashers on wondering what to do next.
Here are some actions that can keep you and your family safe if the vehicle becomes disabled:
- Pull as far off of the highway or interstate shoulder as possible. Get onto the right side of the roadway if able.
- When getting out of the vehicle, exit from the passenger’s side;
- Put the flashers on while waiting for help;
- Don’t walk away from the vehicle, particularly if the vehicle becomes disabled on an interstate, highway or busy road;
- Call for help;
- Plan for emergencies by carrying extra blankets in the winter, food and a fully-charged smartphone;
- Don’t panic.
Here a some tips to keep from experiencing a breakdown:
- Have the vehicle serviced before a long drive. Ask the garage to check for loose belts, worn parts, burned out lights and the condition of the battery;
- Check the tires. Make sure they are properly inflated and have adequate tread;
- Check the engine fluids. Change the oil and make sure the washer, brake and coolant reservoirs are full;
- Take the car for a test drive before leaving. Listen for off noises when accelerating or braking. Make sure there a no shimmies or shaking at high speeds, steering or when applying the brakes;
- Wash the car, especially the windows, lights and mirrors so the driver can see clearly and the lights are bright;
