Pets, especially dogs and cats, are beloved members of the family. That is especially true today, as more and more Americans are bringing furry members into the mix. The 2021-22 National Pet Owners Survey by the American Pet Products Association shows that 70 percent of households own a pet. Dogs are the most popular pet coming in at 69 percent, followed by cats at 45.3 percent. Freshwater fish are third with 11.8 percent. Pets are big business, too. The survey shows that $1.6 billion was spent on pets in 2020.
Still, beyond dollars and statistics, your members’ pets are cuddly creatures that provide comfort and unconditional love. They are adored by everyone in the home, especially the children. The interaction between kids and their pets is priceless.
Keeping pets healthy and happy can sound like a lot of work, but it isn’t. Here are some important tips to help your members care for their pets:
Dogs:
- Vet visits: Pets need annual checkups, just like their owners. In addition to good overall health, a regular vet visit can uncover medical issues that need to be addressed. The vet will also keep up with required vaccinations. Also, consult with the vet about using medication to prevent fleas and heartworm. Discuss the best diet for the dog;
- Keep moving: Many dog breeds are born to run and be active. Give four-legged friends plenty of exercise by taking them to the dog park, frequent walks or letting them run in the backyard. Regular activity will keep them fit while expending their energy so everyone can get a good night’s sleep;
- Their own room: A dog’s crate is their special place. It’s a private space where they can relax and feel comfortable. Respect it. Keep it clean and put a few favorite toys in with the dog’s bedding;
- License: Most local jurisdictions require dog owners to license their dog. The license can help reunite a dog with its owner in case the animal is lost. Implanting a microchip can also help get a doggo back home;
- Pampering: Regular grooming and nail clipping can keep a dog comfortable and looking great;
Cats:
- Nails: Trim the cat’s nails to keep them from damaging walls and woodwork;
- Doctor’s orders: Like their furry brethren, cats need regular vet visits to keep them in top shape;
- Socialization: Though they don’t need constant attention, cats enjoy hanging out with their people, especially when it comes to snuggling into a warm lap;
- Creature comforts: Keep their food and water supply fresh and clean out their litter box every few days;
- IDs: Have the cat wear a collar with a tag that includes the cat’s name and owner’s contact info, and get them microchipped;
