It’s no secret that for most people driving a car is essential. And your members or customers are no exception. A car or truck provides the ability to go where people need to go conveniently and efficiently. Private vehicles are used to go to the store, commute to work or school and to run errands. Road trips to experience new places and visit different communities are fun and exciting. Sure, mass transit is a staple in many larger cities, but for others driving themselves is the most accommodating way of getting around. There were 281.4 million vehicles operating on United States roads and highways in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to Statista.com.
With all those cars and trucks vying for roadway space, collisions are bound to occur. And they do every single day all across the United States. The unfortunate incidents can be costly, both in damaged property and injury. While the majority of crashes are often minor where no one is badly hurt, they can cause serious or fatal injuries. A report form the National Safety Council (NCS) says that more than 42,000 people died in motor-vehicle crashes in 2020. Property damage losses from collisions also add up quickly, even when nobody is injured. Repairing moderate damage to a vehicle can cost thousands of dollars. A small dent or scratch can run upwards of $500 while replacing vehicle body panels can cost thousands.
Fortunately, there are things your members can do to reduce their chances of being in a collision. Here are some for them to consider.
- Pay attention. Distracted driving is real. More than 700 people are injured in crashes caused by distracted driving on a typical day, according to the NSC. The majority of these are from texting . There is just no way a driver can pay attention to the road while texting on an electronic device. And now some states cracking down on distracted driving with hefty fines. Use a hands-free device while driving or have a passenger text for you. Tending to children in the backseat, smoking and eating can also be distractions while behind the wheel;
- Drinking. Alcohol and driving don’t mix. When going out use a designated driver or a ride-sharing company. Driving under the influence increases the possibility of being in a crash, but it can also lead to increased insurance rates, a driver license suspension, fines and possible jail time;
- Respect the yellow light. It’s tempting for some drivers to try and “beat the yellow” so they won’t have to sit and wait out a red traffic light. It’s dangerous because too often drivers end up running a red traffic signal and causing a crash. These collisions could result in serious or fatal injuries;
- Get adequate rest. Fatigued drivers have a higher likelihood of being involved in a collision. In an April 2021 article, Zebra.com said that 100,000 police-reported crashes each year are caused by drowsy driving. People should have a least six hours of sleep before hitting the road.
